Paging Dr. Seldon...

re: #590 nyc redneck

do they feel like they are on such thin ice, this is their only way to survive.

The political opportunists have convinced them of such.

I think the near-constant riots and burnings have done much of the convincing.
I think the concerted failure on the part of the Eurupean governments to deal with the situation reasonably is driving increasing numbers of the citizenry toward direct action.
Those who are most likely to recognize the need for direct action first are, unfortunately, xenophobic by nature and disposition.
Evil canaries in the coalmine, as it were.
Seems to me that the most sane thing to do is to get out in front of the less savory types and try to exert some control over how their action is expressed. Not so much "joining" them as enlisting them.

A sort of Hari Seldon approach, for those who have read Asimov's Foundation.
If Europe is to go up in flames once more, it makes sense to try to minimize the damage caused in the fall.
I've used the phrase "Stumbling toward Kristallnacht" for a couple of years now, and it is a bit creepy to see others (Steyn, for one) starting to point out that eventually the Europeans will reach a breaking point, and it will be incredibly ugly when it happens.
I think that point is a lot nearer than many of us realize, or wish to realize.
